This was the last day of the 6 week session for my fitcampers before they take a week off to rejuvenate, unwind, and prepare for a new 6 weeks of butt-kicking workouts. So, I had to send the few folks, deciding to forgo happy hour and “masochistically” spend it with the resident King of Pain (me), off with a bang.
By the way, I must admit, I am anxiously awaiting the Olympics, all b.s. politics aside. I’m just ready to see some of the world’s best athlete put it all on the line for a moment of glory that actually lasts a lifetime. It’s the same way I feel when I see one of my fitcampers, who could barely finish a workout 2 years ago, due to a nagging knee injury, finish the grueling workout listed below, in less than 30 minutes (a major milestone).
It’s the same way I feel when I see members of my fitness bootcamp nearly twice the age of our youngest class member, telling me with a warrior’s look in their eye, as they run their 10th hill sprint to “Bring IT!” You can’t take that moment of glory from someone, especially whose peers the same age, are riddled with heart disease, diabetes, as well as other body ailments that come with aging, and usually spend these years wishing they could move around easily or reminisce about the days could run or move without pain.
So many of the folks in my class inspire me with their “never say die” spirit. While they may not be competing for a gold medal, or a chance to stand on a podium, singing their country’s national anthem, they have an on-going competition with the voices in their head that may tell them they are: too hurt, too old, never been athletic, too out of shape, wasting their time, should be out drinking with their co-workers and friends, or most importantly in Houston, it’s too darn hot for this madness. These warrior goddesses tell those voices to drink a tall gallon of “Shut the he– up” and just “Bring It!” They have the spirit of a true world class athlete. They, have the spirit of a true Warrior.
Here’s the workout. Give it a try and let me know how you do.
1. 100 Squats
2. 100 Push Ups
3. 100 Reverse Lunges
4. 100 Mt. Climbers (ea. leg)
5. 10 10 yard steep Hill Sprints
There are no given rest periods. This workout is continuous. Drink water as you need it. Record your time, so you have a personal best to compete against, when performing this workout in the future.
Finishing Times:
1. Sincere – 20:00
2. Sally – 23:30
3. Cathy – 24:04
4. Mary – 28:18
p.s. It’s always important to stay hydrated when training in extreme heat. Make sure you train in the evening hours, if your work out outside, during these times.
Also, intense training can cause you to deplete carbs your body needs for energy and recovery, as well as depletes protein needed to build long lean muscle, that in turn, burns fat, during recovery (usually while you sleeping). Therefore, do not forget to consume a quality post-workout shake immediately after your workout, to aid in you fat loss & strength building program.
